New York, NY, 3 March 2020 – Doubleday and Anchor Books have acquired World English rights from Alexandra Machinist at ICM to Kevin Kwan’s new novel, SEX AND VANITY. Kwan’s blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians trilogy hit #1, #2, and #3 on The New York Times bestseller list and over four million copies of the books have been sold in the United States.
SEX AND VANITY will be published on July 14, 2020 by Doubleday (simultaneously with Doubleday Canada, an imprint of Penguin Random House Canada, and Cornerstone, an imprint of Penguin Random House UK) with an announced first printing of 500,000 copies and price of $26.95. The book will be published in hardcover and as an ebook, and in audio by Penguin Random House; it will be published in trade paper by Anchor the following year.
SEX AND VANITY is a glittering tale of love and longing as a young woman finds herself torn between two worlds – the WASP establishment of her father’s family and George Zao, a man she is desperately trying to avoid falling in love with. Moving between summer playgrounds of privilege, peppered with decadent food and extravagant fashion, SEX AND VANITY is a truly modern love story, a daring homage to A Room with a View, and a brilliantly funny comedy of manners set between two cultures.
Kevin Kwan says: “Writing SEX AND VANITY has been a dream come true – it’s an idea that has been brewing in my mind for almost a decade and I can’t wait to introduce my readers to all the new characters and their worlds.”
“SEX AND VANITY is a brilliant novel of racial identity and modern manners wrapped up in a frothy, funny, old fashioned romance,” says Jenny Jackson, Vice President and Senior Editor, Knopf Doubleday. “There are Italian villas decorated with enough gold to offend even Donatella Versace, a debauched midnight couture costume party aboard a mega-yacht, Valentino bikinis and Stella McCartney gowns tossed aside for moonlight trysts, a Park Avenue apartment furnished like a Victorian bordello, and East Hampton tennis clubs shabby-snotty enough to give billionaires wardrobe anxiety. The whole experience of reading SEX AND VANITY is more outrageously fun than eating lobster in a bathtub while tipsy on Aperol Spritz.”
ABOUT SEX AND VANITY
On her very first morning on the jewel-like island of Capri, Lucie Tang Churchill sets eyes on George Zao and she instantly can’t stand him. She can’t stand it when he gallantly offers to trade hotel rooms with her so that she can have the view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, she can’t stand that he knows more about Casa Malaparte than she does, and she really can’t stand it when he kisses her in the darkness of the ancient ruins of a Roman villa and they are caught by her snobbish, disapproving cousin, Charlotte. “Your mother is Chinese so it’s no surprise you’d be attracted to someone like him,” Charlotte teases.
She adamantly denies having feelings for this Hong Kong surfer boy, but several years later, when George unexpectedly appears in East Hampton, where Lucie is weekending with her new fiancé, Lucie finds herself drawn to George again. Soon, Lucie is spinning a web of deceit that involves her family, her fiancé, the co-op board of her Fifth Avenue apartment building, and ultimately herself as she tries mightily to deny George entry into her world – and her heart.
