Author Spotlight: Jen Sincero
Although we had to cancel our talk and signing with Jen Sincero, we did not pass up the opportunity to pick her brain a little bit about writing, reading, and just being a badass. Read our conversation below!

Before You Are a Badass, you worked as a freelance writer and published a novel. What made you want to be a writer?

I honestly never set out to be a writer - writing was just something I was always kind of good at. I fell back on freelance writing when I was struggling to make money. When I started writing books it was because I’d get an idea that I thought was good and figured I’d write it down since that’s what I knew how to do.

What sparked the idea of creating You Are a Badass?

I was doing a lot of work on myself, figuring out how to start making money and build my own business and so I read countless self-help books. I found the majority of the books to be really helpful, but also kind of boring and felt there was room for some self-help books that were more edgy and funny.

Who are the badasses that influenced your life—in general and as a writer?

My parents, my kindergarden teacher and my writing professor in college, my friends.

Do you remember the first piece you've ever written? What was it?

It was a short story about my older brother coming into my room and telling me that my parents were getting divorced.

Which book do you keep coming back to?

I don’t often re-read books because there are so many I still want to read. But I did just re-read The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. And I’m currently obsessed with All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

What are you reading right now?

The Moment of Lift by Melinda Gates

What advice can you give to aspiring writers?

Pay attention to why you love the writers you love. What is it specifically about their writing that strikes you? Also, write as much as you can as often as possible. And read read read.
